Stone Sealing Services
As someone who has natural stone surfaces installed in your office or home, you probably wonder what it would take to make sure they don’t get ruined over time. Well, there are plenty of things that you need to do in order to ensure their durability and lasting appearance. One of the things you need to consider is natural stone sealing. Sealing, as the term suggests, involves creating a protective layer for the natural stone surface to prevent it from absorbing spills, liquids, and dirt.
However, there are a lot of misconceptions about “sealing” natural stone surfaces. A lot of self-professed experts might tell you that certain types of stone don’t require sealing as they aren’t as porous as other types.
Well, they aren’t completely lying. The level of porosity does vary from stone to stone. However, the fact is they are all porous to some degree and that means they will absorb spills and stains to some degree as well. So, it isn’t enough to just clean your travertine, granite, marble or concrete surfaces. You also need to have them sealed in order to ensure that they remain protected for longer.
How Does Sealing Work?
Now, after reading our initial definition, you might think sealing is like coating. Well, it’s a little different. We only use high quality penetrating or impregnating sealers; penetrating natural stone sealants don’t coat the surface, they fill up the stone’s pores. This prevents the pores from absorbing anything. Sealants are similar to resin and they keep out anything that tries to enter the pores. When a sealant isn’t used, it leaves the pores exposed and that’s how your natural stones get stained.
Once the sealant is applied, the excess is wiped off. The sealant that seeps/penetrates into the pores will harden eventually. As indicated earlier, this will create the protective layer. Of course, this isn’t a permanent form of protection. You will have seal regularly in order to enjoy permanent benefits. In fact, cleaning up immediately after a spill ensures that the sealant works in full effect.
Find Out If Your Natural Stone Surfaces Need Sealing
There is a simple experiment to determine whether or not your stone surfaces need sealing. It’s called the water test. All you need to do is create a water puddle on the stone surface. If the area darkens right away, it indicates a need for sealing. However, if the spot doesn’t darken for at least 30 minutes, you do not require sealing.
